The Ragnarok is cheaper and much more ubiquitous than both the Serco Prometheus, which is a heavily armored assault vehicle with plenty of cargo space, and the Marauder manufactured within the Union of Independent Territories, which is essentially a stack of crates with rocket boosters strapped to it - the ultimate trading vehicle, but bring an escort. While it's quite vulnerable to sunflare rocket attacks from fast fighter ships due do its huge bulk and slow acceleration, it can keep pirates at bay - at least those not interested in suicide attacks - with a variety of homing missiles and gatling turrets in all, you can load five different weapons, three small and two large. When making trade runs, the Ragnarok packs an insane amount of firepower and enough cargo space to make reasonably high quantity trade runs. It isn't necessarily the best and fastest fighter, but it's very easily obtainable (low-level characters get access to it), inexpensive, and it has a fairly long range under turbo, which draws different amounts of energy for different ships. I frequently fly in this configuration when I'm anticipating combat against an unknown foe - it's a well-rounded combination of a fast, agile ship combined with a relatively slow energy weapon that packs a wallop but doesn't run out of ammo. A very popular choice is the Vulture with a medium battery power plant and gauss cannons loaded on each wing. The main staples of Vendetta have always been combat and trading, so I will review my favorite combat and trading ships, respectively. Andy Sloane Coder (client/server network code, AI, much more) I think everybody's ship choice depends on what they are trying to accomplish at the time. They are heavier, but also sport a good set of weapons for defending against pirates and rogue drones. If you want to trade though, the Centaur or Marauder ship classes give you the most cargo space. Because it is lighter, it can accelerate faster than most other ships. With two small weapon ports, they are a good dog fighting ship. It doesn't have much cargo space, but for flying around and exploring, it's a good ship. They each have one small weapon and one large weapon port, so I have all the bases covered. Ray Ratelis Coder (3D apis and most game client code, much more) I prefer the Warthog series of ships because I like how they look. If you see one, you'll know it by the distinctive cloud of attack drones racing towards your position. They're giant mining / manufacturing platforms that have gone rogue, aimlessly roaming the galaxy in search of manufacturing resources. well, I think I'm breaking the rules with this answer, but I love the AI Hive Queens. Plus, you can bounce it around like a ping-pong ball and barely take any damage. It's slow, it has limited weapon support, but it's the ultimate choice when 20 or 30 pilots want to have an all-out battle without worrying about paying for what they lose. Waylon Brinck Graphic Artist (game design, mission programming, art) Of all the possible ships and loadouts, my favorite configuration has to be the stock EC-88 that each nation offers freely to its pilots. I made the concussion mines for a similar use they give an area shockwave effect with very minimal damage, essentially a blast of kickback with no kill to it, but they still require some tweaking to make them really useful. A pair of them usually isn't enough to kill a quick-thinking pirate, but it definitely gets their attention and causes them to veer off heavily, often giving enough time to escape. Lightning mines have a "zapping" constant damage effect to any enemy within their range, which is both destructive as well as psychologically deterring constant damage makes one want to get away. Woe to the pirate who decides to jump on the tail of that combination. Although lacking the armor and maneuverability of some of the other trader ships, it does possess two large module ports, which I usually equip with a pair of lightning mine launchers. For long-range trading, I prefer the Centaur. Dual rockets can be quite devastating (and an old favorite of mine), but the limited ammo requires very careful combat decisions. Loadouts with other energy weapons, or a single energy weapon and a single unguided rocket are also useful. During the dance of PvP combat, it can be very useful, allowing one to feint with a shot in one direction, forcing the other player to propel their mass in another direction, where your second shot awaits. For flat combat and dueling, I enjoy a Vulture variant with a pair of gauss cannons that are separately linked to left and right mouse buttons. Jonric: What are a couple of ship configurations you tend to favor in Vendetta Online, and why does each of them appeal to you? John Bergman Managing Director (overall game design & coordination) My favorite ship configuration depends entirely on what I'm trying to do.
